New Year's Is Tomorrow!

by Matthew T. Murray in PLAY, SEX APPEAL, NIGHT OUT

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30th

Aritzia dress. Edie Parker clutch. Christian Louboutin pumps. MAC lipstick.

Ah, it's that time of year again where you vow to never touch another donut or Cosmopolitan ever again! New Year's is upon us and with it comes a batch of resolutions you subconsciously know you can't keep but will at least try to!

One of your resolutions is to be more fashionable and that is one you actually can keep because now you have ME in your life - I tell you what to wear and how to wear it. So you really have no excuse this time around.

To start tomorrow off on the right sartorial note and set the tone for a stylish 2016, I'm suggesting you go out with a BANG! BOOM! KAPOW! Wear a minimalist slip dress (this one is a luxe velvet style from Aritzia and comes in at under $100!) with a glossy patent leather pump (Christian Louboutin's black studded version is shoe #goals).

Since the outfit is neutral and understated so you're going to need a sharp red lip and jazzy clutch (I <3 Edie Parker's monochromatic stripe clutch!) to give the look some pop.

If you absolutely abhor this look, don't worry - I HAVE FIVE LAST-MINUTE OUTFIT IDEAS for the big night out that are easy-peezy lemon-squeezy to throw together.

WHAT TO WEAR TO HOLIDAY PARTIES

You know that now-infamous scene in The Devil Wears Prada where the she-devil Miranda Priestley herself chews out a staffer when she suggests an editorial on florals? Well, florals for spring might not have been groundbreaking buuuuutt for winter, hell yeah fuckin' right they are.

This Tory Burch dress has that elusive magic of quiet elegance that renders it timeless and season-less. Cactus, robin's egg blue orchards, and ivy leaves twist and turn in this eye-catching print making it an unstoppable force of fashion in your wardrobe.

This dress might not scream millenial bad b@%$# with 200 thousand Instagram followers but that is the beauty of styling, ain't it? Worn with Chanel slingbacks, a ladylike bag and fur, this dress would be a vision on mommacita. But paired with a shearling-trimmed leather jacket (this one is a gorgeous See by ChloƩ), a pop of pink clutch (Marni on sale at The Outnet!), and quirky oxford heels (Clarks FTW!), this dress has a youthful fresh vibe that works now and later.

Yes, you will be wearing this dress for the next 75 years so this is good use of your pennies, nickels, and dimes in that eye-sore of a piggy bank that stands proudly on your nightstand.

Plus, a dress with aforementioned timeless elegance can take you to Cousin Benny's Bar Mitzvah paired with minimalist pumps, and to Christmas dinner with the fam (yes, you celebrate Chrismukkah because Seth Cohen taught you well!) It will also take you to a beachside dinner for that Hawaii vacation you've been fantasizing about since you maxed out your credit card to book your tickets three months ago.

So take my word for it and wear this outfit to a holiday party this year. And take my word for it and wear this dress to a holiday party every year till you become that fabulous grandma who swears too much, wears sequin berets with oversize bifocals and smokes pink cigars in Atlantic City (if she isn't actually #goals, I have no idea who is).

WHAT TO WEAR TO HOLIDAY PARTIES

It's that time of year again. The one where you drink four too many cocktails and gain seventeen pounds in a week (don't worry - you'll lose it all in the new year, or so your New Years' resolutions promise). It's holiday season again! You already bought mommy those earrings she not-so-subtly hinted at and you're already furiously fielding through gaggles of group texts about New Year's Eve plans.

And while you love Christmas and the promise of an ugly sweater party - don't worry, I'll do a round-up of all the best ugly sweaters really soon! - your company holiday party is this week!

And because you ended up ferociously flirting with that intern followed-by a classless vomit session in the bathroom (you forgot what tequila does to your liver) at last year's holiday party, it's time to redeem yourself and let those SLAY bells ring. Your #goals: impress the boss and shut that minx of a secretary up (you know that secretary - she who hyena-cackles at her own jokes and has a different Forever21 faux-fur dress for each day of the week).

Every girl in the office will be wearing some type of sparkle with some form of cheap sweater so why not opt for a fashion-forward look that might have sprung joyously from the pages of Harper's Bazaar?

A festive fringe jacket (this one is Saint Laurent) coupled with a Hibiscus-print tiered dress (thank you for the fashionz Marc Jacobs!) is the bee's knees. The juxtaposition of fringe and florals makes this look sing with style! Pair with chocolate brown booties and a Christmas-colored bag and you're ready to knock the socks off of that snooty little secretary. Goodbye socks! Farewell Felicia!
