Denim on Denim (on Denim)

by Matthew T. Murray

According to Urban Dictionary, also known as the intellectual Zeitgeist for millenials across America, racks on racks on racks means "being rich as f@#$, ballin' outta control." This look has next to nothing to do with racks on racks on racks but hey, it's Denim on Denim so let's pretend for the purposes of being a bit more spicy this Monday morning, that it does. Anywhoo, now that denim is the most undisputed and timeless staple you will have in your closet (think of how long you've been wearing jeans? Your entire life, except that string of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs you attended in your first ill-fitting dress?! Thought so!). Now, the new wave of wearing denim is a modern take on the Canadian tuxedo - pairing denim in the same indigo shade and clipping on some Chanel-bling. Why? Because Rihanna and Beyonce freakin' say so. And no shade to the Queen Bey, but Riri did wear this nifty little look first so I'm showing you how to steal her style below with 1000s of Rihanna's wearing denim on denim (okay, it's 12 Rihanna's).

Fruit Brunch

by Matthew T. Murray

Fruit punch means two differentiating tidbits to me. On one hand, it reminds me of the notorious Kool Aid pitcher (or is he a person? Or is he a she? I know not) crashing through houses and turning pools into blood-red somewhat-scary vats of sugar (please tell me you know what the hell I'm talking about as a YouTube search for said commerical yielded nada). On the other hand, fruit punch calls to mind the current trend for all things fruity and tropical-y in the style sphere. This J. Crew jumpsuit is sartorial fruit punch. This is a flawless and I do repeat and emphasize flawless style for those nights out you might not remember but that you also will never forget (Instagram now allows drunkards to piece their night together in a way David Systrom never could have imagined – what the actual fuck? How did we meet Bradley Cooper while grabbing dollar pizza?! True story. I’ll tell you another time).

Anywhoo, back to this jumpity jumpsuit. It does double-duty – for drunken eves, don the look for those tequila-swishing nights with your gal pals (tequila-swishing is a new sport of Olympian qualification, or so I’ve heard from a well-informed alcoholic) or rock it for a more daytime-appropriate weekend look (pictured in this lovely little Outfix above). Can’t you imagine wearing this look to brunch, from the ruby-red-bloodshot-eye-concealing Gant tortoise sunnies to the just-large-enough-to-hold-the-essentials caramel-colored J. Crew tote. Slip into some embossed white DVF pumps for a whiff of elegance, spritz on your Chanel No. 5 for a whiff of something other than that, and then dive into your mid-morning of Mimosa-fueled gossip. Shopity Shop below:

Jumpsuit by J. Crew, $295  /  Sunglasses by GANT, $110  /  Handbag by J. Crew, $168  /  Heels by Diane von Furstenberg, $325

Mary-Kate and Ashley Realness

by Matthew T. Murray

Remember when 'boho' was a thing. Like a thing to end all things. The thing. Everyone was buzzing about boho. Half-bag-lady, half-pseudo-hippie, and all-Anthropologie/Vintage-shop-treasure-finds graced the slender and slivering bodies of Mischa Barton, the Olsten twinz and Rachel Bilson. 'Boho' garbs in swirling prints with a nod to 70s vintage danced through New York and California and a tab open at Free People was a status symbol. Flash-forward to 2014 and I'm seeing traces of boho skitting down the runways of daring designers (Givenchy's fall collection screeched with spot-on Olsen-circa-2005-realness) and has trickled into the fast-fashion arena (Zara had upwards of 4,000 boho dresses for sale a week ago and 3,999 of them were cuter than a fat baby).

Embrace this new wave of bohemian galore with a more upscale, professional take. What was once hippy-dippy is now as cool and trendy as kale. The big fat point - Raffia-fringy sandals, patchwork denim, a white blouse with little criss-cross laces, a romantic-ish clutch and strands of fluffy, tassel-dangling necklaces - what's not to like.

Go boho or go home... and shop this Outfix below:

Top by J. Crew, $98   /  Jeans by Current/Elliott, $248  /  Necklaces by Anthropologie, $87 for both necklaces pictured  /  Heels by Candela, $398  /  Clutch by Anthropologie, $68
